In Situ Tests in Geotechnical Engineering

Author: Jacques Monnet
First published:6 November 2015
Print ISBN:9781848218499
This book deals with in-situ tests that are performed in geotechnics to identify and characterize the soil. These measurements are then used to size the Civil Engineering works.
This book is intended for engineers, students and geotechnical researchers. It provides useful information for use and optimal use of in-situ tests to achieve a better book adaptation of civil engineering on the ground. DOWNLOAD

In Situ Testing in Geomechanics: The Main Tests

Author: Fernando Schnaid, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Demanding a thorough knowledge of material behaviour and numerical modelling, site characterisation and in situ test interpretation are no longer just basic empirical recommendations. Giving a critical appraisal of the understanding and assessment of the stress-strain-time and strength characteristics of geomaterials, this book explores new interpretation methods for measuring properties of a variety of soil formations. Emphasis is given to the five most commonly encountered in situ test techniques: standard penetration, cone penetration, vane test, pressuremeter, and dilatometer tests. Ideal for practising engineers in the fields of geomechanics and environmental engineering. It is also a valuable companion for students coming to the end of their engineering courses and looking to work in this sector. DOWNLOAD

In situ Testings and Soil Properties Correlations

SOIL & ROCK PROPERTIES CORRELATIONS BOOKS

Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering (2016)

This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database. DOWNLOAD

Soil Properties and their Correlations 2nd Ed. (2016)

Soil Properties and their Correlations, Second Edition provides a summary of commonly-used soil engineering properties and gives a wide range of correlations between the various properties, presented in the context of how they will be used in geotechnical design.
The book is divided into 11 chapters: Commonly-measured properties; Grading and plasticity; Density; Permeability, Consolidation and settlement; Shear strength; California bearing ratio; Shrinkage and swelling characteristics; Frost susceptibility; Susceptibility to combustion; and Soil-structure interfaces. In addition, there are two appendices: Soil classification systems; and Sampling methods.
This new, more comprehensive, edition provides material that would be of practical assistance to those faced with the problem of having to estimate soil behaviour from little or no laboratory test data. DOWNLOAD

Geotechnical Correlations for Soils and Rocks (2018)

The modelling tools for soils and rocks require more and more specific parameters not always available from the standard or usual survey campaigns, this generally for reasons of delay or costs. The use of correlations to solve the gap between available parameters and the required ones is a common practice. Many of them exist but are spread throughout numerous papers or books. The aim of this formulary is to provide a large synthesis of the existing correlations accumulated by the authors during more than 40 years academic and consulting careers. DOWNLOAD

Drilled Shafts Design Books

Drilled shafts in rock are widely used as foundations of heavy structures such as highway bridges and tall buildings. Although much has been learned about the analysis and design of drilled shafts in rock, all the major findings are published in the form of reports and articles in technical journals and conference proceedings. This book is the first to present and summarize the latest information in one volume, highlighting for the reader the principle differences between foundations in soil, and foundations in rock masses containing discontinuities. This book presents methods for characterizing discontinuities in jointed rock masses, and considering their effects on the behavior of drilled shafts. A valuable tool for practitioners in geological engineering, rock mechanics and foundation engineering.

Geotechnical Engineering of Dams, 2nd ed. (Book)

This book provides a comprehensive text on the geotechnical and geological aspects of the investigations for and the design and construction of new dams and the review and assessment of existing dams. The emphasis is on embankment dams, but much of the text, particularly those parts related to geology, can be used for concrete gravity and arch dams. The book aims to provide practising dam engineers and geologists with a practical approach, as well as to give university students an insight into the subject of dam engineering. The theoretical basis upon which design methods have been developed is included so readers develop a proper understanding of the limitations of the methods. All phases of investigation, design and construction are covered, from the initial assessment of a dam-site and the development and carrying out of a detailed site investigation program, through to the preliminary and detailed design phases and ultimately the construction phase. The assessment of existing dams, including the analysis of risks posed by those dams, is also discussed. This wholly revised and significantly expanded 2nd edition includes a lengthy new chapter on the assessment of the likelihood of failure of dams by internal erosion and piping.

Handbook of Tropical Residual Soils Engineering

Handbook of Tropical Residual Soils Engineering
Bujang B.K. Huat, David G. Toll, Arun Prasad

Features

  • The Handbook of Tropical Residual Soils Engineering is a complete reference source and manual for every engineer working on or interested in soil and foundation engineering in tropical areas
  • almost all aspects of tropical residual soils are treated, including a range of engineering applications
  • a dedicated part of the book contains regionally and country-specific sections, including typical characteristics, soil conditions and practical cases
  • includes numerous tables and charts with useful data

Summary

Residual soils are found in many parts of the world. Like other soils, they are used extensively in construction, either to build upon, or as construction material. They are formed when the rate of rock weathering is more rapid than transportation of the weathered particles by e.g., water, gravity and wind, which results in a large share of the soils formed remaining in place. The soils typically retain many of the characteristics of the parent rock. In a tropical region, residual soil layers can be very thick, sometimes extending to hundreds of meters before reaching un-weathered rock. Unlike the more familiar transported sediment soil, the engineering properties and behaviour of tropical residual soils may vary widely from place to place depending upon the rock of origin and the local climate during their formation; and hence are more difficult to predict and model mathematically. Despite their abundance and significance our knowledge and understanding of these soils is not as extensive as that of transported sediment soil.

This volume is intended as a reference guide for practitioners, researchers and advanced students in civil, construction and geological engineering. Unique in its coverage of the subject, it may serve as a standard that benefits every engineer involved in geological, foundation and construction work in tropical residual soils.
